There are a few leading software companies who would love if you pay them up to $60 a month for anywhere, anytime access to your desktop or laptop.

Of of the more popular options is GoToMyPC which costs $10 a month. This may not seem like a bad deal, until you look a bit closer. $10 a month is $120 a year and $600 after 5 years. Then is is $600 the next 5 years, and so on. After 15 years of remote access to your pc with GoToMyPc, you would have spent more than $1800 on the service.

Another alternative is LogMeIn which is $12 for its monthly plan. You get to the same $600 connection costs after 5 years, but slightly faster.

There is another program called GoToAssist, which is more than $60 for its monthly plan. There are many others. All quality good programs that actually do a good job of connecting you to your home or office pc from anywhere.

As a business owner, you start to consider the monthly and yearly cost of multiple employees using these services. How many employees do you have? 1, 2, 5, 10?

If you had 5 employees all using GoToMyPc, that would cost you $600 a year. After 5 years, you would have spent over $3000 on remote access software. You always have to pay monthly if you want this service from them. You never own anything, you just pay,pay,pay.

A better solution.

I would like to introduce you to a remote access solution that does not require ongoing monthly payments. An alternative that you own, that needs minimal support and can be scaled at any time for any number of employees. This solution is your own VPN server. VPN stands for Virtual private Network. Lets do a bit of math;

5 remote employees with LogMeIn would cost you$60 a month. After 1 year, that is $720. After 5 years, that is $3600, and after 10 years you have spent $7200.

With your own in house VPN setup, 5 employees cost you $840. ($600+ (60×4)) After 1 year that costs you $0.00. After 5 years, that is $0.00, and after 10 years you have spent $0.00

A no brainier right? They monthly subscription model expects you to not know the true costs of getting your own VPN setup, or to value the ability to pay $60 a month forever, over the initial costs of $840.

Your companies own VPN setup will not last forever. It will have to be upgraded and maintained periodically. It will probably not go 10 years without needing some sort of maintenance.

It will not costs anything near $3600 to repair. Even if it only lasts 5 years, (highly unlikely) you still only spend $600 every 5 years, instead of $3600. The connection licenses never expire so if you replace the VPN server, you don’t have to replace the licenses!
